The implantable cardiac defibrillator is both a pacemaker and a defibrillator. It is usually indicated in patients who are felt to be at high risk for sudden cardiac death. One to three wires are threaded through a vein to specific heart chambers. The procedure usually lasts 90 minutes, and requires an overnight stay in the hospital. Only light sedation is usually necessary.
